In Vitro Fertilization Q &A

What is in vitro fertilization?

IVF is one of the most successful types of assisted reproductive technology (ART). During IVF, a woman’s eggs are combined with sperm in the lab.

Once the egg is fertilized, the embryo is transferred to a woman’s uterus. Alternatively, the egg or embryo can be frozen and preserved for future IVF procedures.

Who is a good candidate for in vitro fertilization?

IVF is an option when your infertility is associated with:

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
  • Ovulation disorders (like PCOS)
  • Uterine and cervical conditions
  • Endometriosis
  • Male factor infertility
  • Unexplained infertility

IVF is also an exceptional choice for LGBTQ couples who want to build their family.

What is the in vitro fertilization process?

During IVF, you go through a series of well-planned steps called an IVF cycle. One IVF cycle includes:

Ovulation induction

During ovulation induction, your provider administers fertility medication to stimulate the ovaries, aiming to produce multiple mature eggs.

Egg retrieval

Egg retrieval, the minor surgical process of removing the mature eggs from your ovaries, occurs 36 hours after your final dose of medication.

Semen collection and preparation

This is usually timed to coincide with egg retrieval. Then the sperm are taken to the lab where they’re evaluated, and the healthiest ones are chosen for fertilizing your eggs.

Insemination, fertilization, and embryo development

Sperm and eggs are combined to create embryos, which are cultured to grow and divide for 3-5 days to prepare for transfer.

Embryo transfer

Once the proper amount of time has passed, you return to the office for the embryo transfer. Using a thin catheter inserted through your cervix, your provider inserts one or two embryos into your uterus. This increases the chances of conception while lowering the risk of multiple births.

If needed, your provider can perform assisted hatching, a procedure that helps embryos properly implant into the uterine wall by making a tiny incision into the outer shell just before transfer.

Embryo cryopreservation (freezing)

If more embryos than necessary develop, you have the option to cryopreserve (freeze) good-quality embryos for future rounds of IVF.
