Like traditional laparoscopic surgery which requires patients to undergo general anesthesia, robotic-assisted surgery is performed using only a few tiny incisions into the abdomen. A laparoscope (small camera) is inserted into the incisions to project images from inside the patient onto a computer monitor, giving the surgeon a better view of the patient. When performed robotically, the surgical instruments are affixed to robotic arms and inserted through incisions. From a nearby console, the surgeon is able to control the robotic arms and complete the procedure with enhanced dexterity and incredible precision.
